Join Eastern State Penitentiary as we commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his 1963 "Letter from Birmingham Jail." Engage in special readings from the landmark text and respond to its relevance today. All special activities are free and open to the public. Daytime tours of Eastern State are available for standard admission prices.
Professional actors, youth, and community leaders read excerpts from Dr. King's letter three times a day on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. After each reading, visitors are invited to respond to the letter's relevance today during an informal discussion moderated by a civil rights scholar.
In addition, on Monday, January 20 only, join us for family activities (10 am - 4 pm) with the African American Museum in Philadelphia and Art Sanctuary, musical performances (1 pm and 3 pm) by Justin Griggs, and community electronics recycling (10 am - 2 pm) with PAR-Recycle Works. Celebrate Juneteenth with us! Our theme is "Freedom's Legacy: Moving Forward." Reflecting on the African-American ties, we see the Eagle as a symbol of knowing your self-worth and valuing the concept of Know Thyself and Believe.
Poet-Storyteller Oba William King returns to share insights, to uplift us and remind us of the history of Juneteenth. We will sing with him, learn from him, love his drum beats, and be inspired by him. He says, "In the process of learning we lose fear." Together in a family and community, we learn that we are stronger. By choosing pillars or goals of life to follow, we thrive and help each other together. Let the celebration begin!

MyMainstage is a unique, fully online, song and dance-filled enrichment program for theater-loving kids ages 10-17.
Inspired by our in-person camp, Mainstage, MyMainstage is taught by our team of New York theater pros, and includes 20-hours (Monday through Friday) of interactive classes in singing, dancing, acting, and related activities delivered online to aspiring performers in the comfort of their own home.
The program includes at home pre-camp activities such as show-themed set and props craft projects, and costume guides enabling campers to be involved creatively in every aspect of the production. MyMainstage culminates in the Family Finale that is presented LIVE ONLINE and features a professionally produced video of the camp ensemble performing songs and scenes from the year's musical, a downloadable Playbill, as well as a special introduction of each of the campers.
To enable effective teaching and to promote personal interaction between teacher and camper, enrollment is limited to 60 participants. Campers will be organized into small groups of 8-15 participants per group according to age. Each class encourages kids to make new friends, as well as inspires independent learning outside of camp so each performer can master their dialogue, songs, and movement.
