I’m a big supporter of organized team sports for kids – but if you have ever watched your child and a bunch of other 3-5 year olds all chase the ball around a soccer field every Saturday you might wonder if that’s really the best way to introduce your child to the game of soccer! I played soccer since the age of 5, so when my oldest child was old enough, we signed her up for team soccer. After two seasons, at age 3 and age 5, we realized that she wasn’t actually learning much or any of the fundamentals of the game.
I had heard about Soccer Shots from other parents who always had positive feedback. When it became available at my son’s school, we decided to register him. I don’t think I can say enough good things about how great our experience was! He was shy and hesitant to join the group at first, even though I was just across the gym and would be staying to watch the whole time. His coach, Coach Andrew, really went the extra mile to help him feel comfortable joining in. After a couple weeks, he was ready to jump right in! Each week they would play different games that would make it fun to develop different skills important to the game, such as dribbling. For example, my son loved when they would dribble their soccer ball and have to avoid the “volcano” which was actually a cone! While the kids are waiting their turn, Coach Andrew comes up with lots of fun and creative ways to keep them focused. For the last few minutes, the kids have a scrimmage against each other and Coach Andrew.
Not only do I love the fact that they are learning the fundamentals while playing fun games, but Soccer Shots also does a great job of teaching something I think is equally important in any sport – good sportsmanship. They focus on encouraging and supporting each other and being a good sport all throughout every session. At the end of every session, they get a sticker which my son wears with pride for the rest of the day!
Soccer Shots is a great program and I highly recommend it for any beginning soccer player until they are ready for the next level – playing on an organized team with weekly games. I have seen my son’s confidence and excitement for the game grow through his participation in Soccer Shots, and he can’t wait until the next session starts!
